Welcome to First Grade
Do not forget that next week is Fall Break. The children will return to school on Monday, October 30th. Enjoy your Fall Break!!
We will begin our annual Coat Drive on Monday, October 30th. It will end on November 23rd. Please send in any new or gently used coats, jackets, hats, gloves, or scarves that you would like to donate. All donations will be given to those in need in our county or our neighboring counties.
We will be having our Halloween parties on October 31st. The children are not permitted to wear costumes.
All Saints Day is November 1st. The children may come to school dressed as their favorite saint. Please make sure your child is wearing his/her school uniform under the costume because we will remove the costumes shortly after Mass.
Weekly Agenda October 30th - November 3rd
Reading: This week's phonics will focus on reading and writing words with the digraphs "sh, th, ng". This week's high frequency words are: , all, call, day, her, want. We will practice these words all week and your child will be tested over reading these words on Friday. On Monday and Tuesday we will work on the story Thump Thump Helps Out (pages 74-85). Your child will bring this book home on Monday. On Wednesday and Thursday we will work on the story Nells Books (pages 64-81). Your child will bring this book home on Wednesday. Our comprehension skill will focus on the characters, setting, and events. We will have our reading test on Friday.
Math: We will continue working on chapter 3, which focuses on different addition strategies. We will use these strategies to begin working on larger sums.
Science: We will begin our next unit, which helps the students learn about light energy. We will do several projects as we learn about light.
Writing/Grammar: We will continue learning about nouns. This week we will focus on common and proper nouns.
Social Studies: We will continue studying geography. We will begin with the compass rose and basic parts of simple maps.
Religion: We will finish working on chapter 5. We will take a test over chapter 5 on Thursday, November 2nd. We will also do a special study of several saints and make a book.
