Welcome to First Grade
You will find your child's third quarter report card in his/her green folder today. Please review it with your child, then sign and return it to school. I would like to have them all returned by Wednesday, March 21st. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school.
I tested the students reading levels for the end of third quarter last week. You will find the note that states your child's reading level at this time. The goal is to be at least at level H at this time. The levels go up in alphabetical order.
You will also find a timed test for addtion facts in your child's folder today. We will begin taking a timed test once a week to help the children master their facts. The children will need to pass the addition facts in three minutes before going on to subtraction. They must score at least a 57 or higher to pass.
The stations of the cross on Friday, March 16th will be acted out by the 8th graders.
You will notice that some math packets have the third page incomplete. If the students are doing well with the concept, we sometimes skip the last page. I am keeping on the packets because some of the kids want extra work to do at home. These are NOT homework assignments and do not need to be returned to me.
We will be having a Spirit Wear Day on Wednesday, March 21st. The children must wear uniform bottoms, but they can wear any St. Michael shirt with the uniform bottoms.
Weekly Agenda March 19th - March 23rd
Reading: This week's phonics will focus on reading and writing words with "ou" and "ow". This week's high frequency words are: color, early, nothing, instead, oh, thought. We will practice these words all week and your child will be tested over reading these words on Friday. This week's vocabulary words are scrambled (meaning to climb or move quickly) and suddenly (meaning it happens quickly without notice). On Monday and Tuesday we will work on the story Now What's That Sound (pages 180-191). Your child will bring this book home on Monday. On Wednesday and Thursday we will work on the story Whistle for Willie (pages 2226-255). Your child will bring this book home on Wednesday and Thursday. Our comprehension skill will focus on identifying problems and solutions. We will have our reading test on Friday.
