Welcome to First Grade
Thank you to the parents who have already sent in their Fall Fest basket donation for our classroom. If you have not sent in your donation, please send it in by Friday, August 25th. Our basket theme is gift cards so feel free to send a gift card or cash for me to purchase gift cards.
I am working on doing some beginning of the year assessment to make sure everyone remembers everything from kindergarten. I will also be testing your child's reading level over the next week. I will send home reports as soon as I get everyone finished.
The solar eclipse is on Monday, August 21st. We will have school as usual, but we need to make sure the children know how to stay safe. Please remind your child to NOT look directly at the eclipse because it can damage their eyes. We are even recommending you send a baseball cap or visor with your child that he/she may wear at dismissal to help them from being tempted to look directly at the sun. I will also talk to the children about beign safe. We will also use a special website to watch the solar eclipse in our classroom.
Weekly Agenda August 21st - August 25th
Reading: This week's phonics will focus on reading and writing short "a" words. This week's high frequency words are: does, what, school, not. We will practice these words all week and your child will be tested over reading these words on Friday.
Math: We will continue working on chapter one of our math book. We will be working on reviewing our addition skills. We will also be working on all numbers from one to twenty over the next couple of weeks.
Science: Our first unit is over sound. We will continue exploring sound and vibrations by making guitars with boxes and different sized rubber bands.
Writing/Grammar: We review basic sentence structure such as, punctuation, capital letters, and a complete thought. We are also working on our handwriting and forming our letters and numbers correctly.
Social Studies: We did not have time to begin social studies last week. Hopefully, we will begin our unit on being a good citizen.
Religion: We are working on chapter one, which discusses that God is our father. We will focus on the story of creation from the Bible in this chapter.
