Welcome to First Grade
Everyone had a great week! I am very proud of how well the students remembered routines and skills from kindergarten.
You will find a copy of the first grade daily schedule in your child's green folder today. This is a general schedule and can change on a daily basis based on the students' needs. If we are deep into a science lesson and the students are very involved, we may continue past the schedule. This could be true for any subject.
I just want to remind everyone that the Scholastic book orders are due on August 17th. Also, your donations for the the Festival basket raffle are due on August 24th.
When you send lunch money for your child, please make sure that it is in an envelope. The envelope should be marked with your child's name and grade.
Weekly Agenda August 13th - August 17th
Reading: We will continue reviewing all of the letters and their sounds including the short vowel sounds. We will also begin learning how to do Daily 5 and review basic comprehension skills. I will begin testing for reading levels on Monday or Tuesday.
Math: We began our first unit in math on Thursday. We will continue working on this unit all week. This unit covers simple graphs to find out about each other and taking apart basic numbers through 20.
Science: We did a simple STEM challenge on Friday, August 10th using marshmallows and spaghetti noodles. Ask your child how his/her group did with the challenge. We will begin our first science unit on Monday. This unit studies sound and the energy it makes.
Writing/Grammar: We will do some simple writing about animals and favorite things of each student. I will use these writings to get a basis of where each student is in his/her writing skills.
Social Studies: We will begin our first unit on citizenship. We will discuss rules and laws.
Religion: We will begin chapter 1 in our religion books. This chapter discusses that God is our Father who created everything.
